Word Up was released in 1986 on the Atlanta Artists record label. The album was a huge success and reached #1 in the Billboard R&B Albums Chart. The tracks Candy, 'Word Up' and 'Back and Forth' were released as singles and achieved similar success. Candy and 'Word Up' both reached #1 in the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart and 'Back and Forth' reached #3 in the same chart.
